Millions of viewers around the world tune in to watch the legal battle between Hollywood heavyweights Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, and as the drama unfolds, a new star has stepped into the spotlight: the lawyer by M. Depp, Camille Vasquez.

The young California lawyer caught the attention of millions during his client’s defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife.

Ms Vasquez, 37, has become an unlikely – and unwitting – co-star on the show, winning fans for her sharp legal style.

T-shirts emblazoned with her name and hashtags congratulating her are making the rounds on social media.

A two-minute video of Ms Vasquez repeatedly interrupting Ms Heard’s lawyer to ‘object’ – a legal term used to file a formal protest in court – has amassed more than 27 million views on TikTok in just days .

The viral clip has even sparked parodies on social media, in which users “go against” friends and family in conversation. Collectively, TikTok videos using the hashtag #CamilleVasquez have amassed hundreds of millions of views.

“I’m still a Johnny Depp fan,” read one of the many tweets about him. “But I am also now an unconditional fan of Camille Vasquez”.

So, who is the lawyer who caught the attention of court watchers?

Born in San Francisco to Cuban and Colombian parents, Ms. Vasquez is a 2006 graduate of the University of Southern California and a 2010 graduate of Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles.

For the past four years she has been a partner at Brown Rudnick, the high profile law firm hired by Johnny Depp to represent him in his $50m (£40m) defamation case against Ms Heard . She is one of nine firm attorneys involved in the lawsuit.

In 2021, she was named one of Best Lawyer magazine’s “One to Watch” attorneys.

She specializes in litigation and arbitration, with a focus on representing plaintiffs in defamation cases – as she does for Mr. Depp.

To her new followers, however, Ms. Vasquez is perhaps best known for her many objections and for a series of tense exchanges with Ms. Heard.

During two days of cross-examination, Ms Vasquez sought to cast doubt on Ms Heard’s account of her troubled marriage to Mr Depp in the hope that jurors will see inconsistencies in her claims.

“You were the one who assaulted someone with a bottle in Australia, weren’t you, Mrs. Heard?” Ms. Vasquez asked in an exchange referring to a chaotic 2015 fight in Australia, in which Ms. Heard alleges that Mr. Depp sexually assaulted her with a bottle. “You weren’t afraid of him at all, were you?”

Among other memorable court moments, Ms Vasquez questioned Ms Heard about the fate of $7million previously pledged to charity, accusing her of editing photos of herself with bruises and, in one case , suggesting it owes its box office success in part to Mr. Depp. .

“Johnny Depp landed you that part in Aquaman, didn’t he?” Ms. Vasquez asked.

Role model – or not?

Ms Vasquez’s fiery defense of Mr Depp has also made her a talking point within the #MeToo movement against sexual abuse and harassment.

Some critics have accused her of not believing Ms Heard’s claims or of discrediting her allegations of abuse.

“Thank you Camille Vasquez for single-handedly turning feminism back 50 years in less than two hours,” one Twitter user said. “History will not remember you kindly.”

Her followers, on the other hand, championed her as an advocate for the rights of male victims of domestic violence and as a potential role model.

Whether or not Ms. Vasquez’s popularity among Mr. Depp’s supporters translates into success in court remains to be seen.

“It’s unclear whether the reaction from the public online is the same as that from individual jurors,” defense attorney and former judge Halim Dhanidina told The Daily Beast.

Mr Dhanidina, however, said Ms Vasquez’s popularity suggests the trial is an “uphill battle” for Ms Heard.

“The public doesn’t like you – and even likes Johnny Depp’s lawyer more,” he said. “That must be confusing your head a bit.”
